يمتاز الحديد الكربوني بدرجة صلابة عالية ومقاومة للتآكل.
هو سبيكة مكونة من الحديد والكربون. وتُؤثر نسبة الكربون على صلابته ودرجة ليونته ومرونته. فكلما زادت نسبة الكربون في السبيكة زادت درجة صلابته وقلت درجة مرونته. وهو يمتاز بصلابته وقوته كما أنه قليل التكلفة مقارة بالأنواع الأخرى من الحديد.
